How to Fix PS5 Controller Drift
Your DualSense is moving on its own. Here are the fixes worth trying at home, in order, and what to do when the drift keeps coming back.
1. Reset the controller
Turn off the PS5. On the back of the DualSense, near the L2 button, there's a small hole with a reset button inside. Press it with a pin or paperclip for about five seconds, then reconnect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
2. Update the controller's software
On the PS5, go to Settings, then Accessories, then Controllers, and look for Wireless Controller Device Software. Sony occasionally ships updates, and it rules out a software cause before you open anything.
3. Clean around the stick
Push the stick to one side and blow short bursts of compressed air around its base, then rotate the stick a few full circles. Repeat on each side. This helps when dust is the cause, not wear.
4. Raise the dead zone in-game
Many games let you set a stick dead zone. Raising it a little hides mild drift. It's a workaround, not a fix, and it makes aiming slightly less precise.
5. Replace the stick (the permanent fix)
If the drift returns after all that, the carbon track inside the stick is worn. The DualSense's stick modules are soldered to the board, so replacing one means desoldering it, which is easy to get wrong without the right tools.
Our PS5 controller repair swaps the worn module for a K-SILVER TMR joystick, which senses movement with magnets and has no track to wear out. It's $20 for one stick or $35 for both, with the TMR stick included. DualSense Edge drift is $25 per stick.
Common questions
Why is my PS5 controller drifting?
Usually the carbon track inside the potentiometer joystick has worn down, so the stick reports movement that isn't happening. Dust and, rarely, software issues can cause it too.
Can you calibrate a PS5 controller?
The PS5 has no built-in stick calibration. Resetting the controller and updating its software are the closest options on the console.
Does resetting a DualSense fix drift?
It can clear a software glitch, but if the stick itself is worn, the drift comes back.
How much does it cost to fix PS5 controller drift?
$20 for one stick or $35 for both, with K-SILVER TMR sticks included. DualSense Edge drift is $25 per stick.
Tried everything and it's still drifting?
That's a worn stick. Book a drop-off in Hamilton or mail it in, and get a TMR stick that won't wear out.
