How to Fix Xbox Controller Drift

Xbox controllers are some of the most drift-prone pads around. Here's what you can try yourself, and the fix that stops it for good.

1. Update the controller firmware

Open the Xbox Accessories app on your Xbox or Windows PC, select the controller, and check for an update. It rules out a software cause before you go further.

2. Power-cycle the controller

Hold the Xbox button for about ten seconds to turn the controller off, then press it again to turn it back on. Swap in fresh batteries too, since low power can cause odd behaviour.

3. Clean around the stick

Tilt the stick to one side and blow compressed air around its base, then roll it in full circles. Repeat in each direction. This helps when grime is the cause.

4. Raise the dead zone in-game

Most shooters and many other games have a dead zone setting. Raising it hides mild drift, at the cost of a little precision.

5. Replace the stick (the permanent fix)

If drift keeps returning, the stick's internal track is worn. Xbox stick modules are soldered to the board, so this is a desoldering job.

Our Xbox controller repair fits K-SILVER TMR joysticks, which sense movement magnetically and don't wear the same way. It's $20 for one stick or $35 for both on Series controllers, TMR stick included. Elite controllers are $25 per stick.

Check the warranty first. Standard Xbox controllers have a 90-day warranty in Canada, and the Elite Series 2 has one year. Is drift covered by warranty? →
FAQ

Common questions

Why does my Xbox controller drift?

Most Xbox drift comes from wear on the potentiometer track inside the joystick. Dust and debris can also cause it.

Can you calibrate an Xbox controller?

The Xbox has no built-in stick calibration. Updating firmware through the Xbox Accessories app and adjusting dead zones in games are the main options.

Do you fix Xbox Elite drift?

Yes. Elite and Elite Series 2 drift is $25 per stick, with no two-stick discount, since they're a harder job.

How much does Xbox controller drift repair cost?

$20 for one stick or $35 for both on Series controllers, with K-SILVER TMR sticks included.
