Joy-Con Drift Fix

Joy-Con drift is so common it's practically a meme. Here's how to calibrate and clean them, and your options when that isn't enough.

1. Calibrate the sticks

On the Switch, go to System Settings, then Controllers and Sensors, then Calibrate Control Sticks. Follow the prompts for each Joy-Con. If the stick reads off-centre when you're not touching it, calibration can fix it.

2. Update the controllers

In the same Controllers and Sensors menu, choose Update Controllers. It takes a minute and rules out a software problem.

3. Clean under the stick's rubber skirt

Lift the edge of the rubber skirt around the stick and blow short bursts of compressed air underneath, then roll the stick in circles. Dust is a common cause of Joy-Con drift.

4. Replace the joystick

If the drift keeps returning, the stick is worn. Joy-Con sticks connect by ribbon cable, but the shells use tri-wing screws and the ribbons are fragile.

Our Joy-Con repair replaces the worn stick, with magnetic-sensor sticks fitted where they're available so the fix lasts longer than a stock part. Joy-Con drift repair starts at $20, in Hamilton or by mail from anywhere in Canada.

Got a Switch Lite? Its sticks are built into the console, so you can't just swap a controller. We replace those too.
